 Baba Siddique Shot in Bandra: What Happened?

On the evening of October 12, 2024, Baba Ziauddin Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister and senior leader of the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was tragically shot in Mumbai’s Bandra East. The attack occurred near the office of his son, Zeeshan Siddique, an MLA representing Bandra East, around 9:30 PM. According to reports, three bullets were fired at Baba Siddique by unidentified assailants, with one bullet hitting his chest.

Siddique was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he was given emergency treatment, including continuous cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Despite the best efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. The sudden and shocking nature of the attack has sparked an outcry over the law and order situation in Mumbai, especially as it occurred just months before the crucial Maharashtra Assembly elections.

Two suspects have been taken into custody by Mumbai police in connection with the shooting. However, the investigation is ongoing, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Political leaders across Maharashtra expressed their shock and grief over Siddique’s untimely death, with some calling for heightened security measures for public figures.

Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey criticized the state government, questioning how such an attack could occur in broad daylight in a city like Mumbai. He called for the resignation of Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, arguing that the government’s inability to protect its leaders reflects a larger breakdown in the state’s security apparatus.

Early Political Career and Rise to Prominence Baba Siddique’s political journey began in 1977 when he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) as a teenager. He quickly rose through the ranks, participating in student movements under the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress. By 1980, he was appointed General Secretary of Bandra Taluka’s Youth Congress, and by 1982, he became its President. His early involvement in grassroots politics paved the way for his ascent in the political arena.    

Key Political Roles Siddique’s first significant political role came when he was elected as a Municipal Corporator in Mumbai in 1993, serving two terms. His growing influence led to his election as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Bandra West in 1999. He served as an MLA for three consecutive terms in 1999, 2004, and 2009, becoming a trusted and respected figure in the constituency.

From 2004 to 2008, Siddique held several ministerial positions, including Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies, Labour, and FDA, where he played a pivotal role in overseeing key sectors of the Maharashtra government.

Contribution to Urban Development Beyond his political career, Baba Siddique contributed to Mumbai's urban development, including spearheading the creation of the Eco-Garden in the Bandra-Khar region in 2011. His involvement in various social projects made him a beloved figure in his community.   

Transition to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) In February 2024, Baba Siddique made headlines when he resigned from the Indian National Congress after nearly 48 years of association with the party. Citing differences with the party's leadership, Siddique joined the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), marking a new chapter in his political career. His son, Zeeshan Siddique, had already been expelled from the Congress in August 2023, further signaling the family's political realignment.

Personal Life

Baba Siddique is survived by his wife, Shehzeen Siddique, and their two children, Zeeshan and Dr. Arshia Siddique. Known for hosting lavish parties that brought together Mumbai’s elite, Baba Siddique was also recognized for resolving a public feud between Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan at one of his famous iftar parties in 2013.
